(Norwich, CT) -- The Norwich Sea Unicorns scored four unanswered runs in the late innings and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but their rally fell short in an 8-4 loss to the Westfield Starfires Thursday night at Dodd Stadium.

Norwich slowly crawled back into the game by scoring two runs in the seventh. Kaelen Culpepper (Memphis, TN/Kansas State University) put the Sea Unicorns on the board with an RBI base hit that plated David Driscoll (Hingham, MA/Williams College). The second run came on a Jared Zimbardo (Middlesex, NJ/Quinnipiac University) fielder’s choice that scored Noah Budzik (Cromwell, CT/University of New Haven).

In the ninth, Ian Battipaglia (Chesire, CT/Franklin Pierce University) drove in Culpepper with a bases-loaded RBI single to right. Tyler Wells (Danville, VT/University of New Haven) hustled out a fielder’s choice that scored Hunter Yaworski (Brooklyn, CT/Mitchell College), extending the game and narrowing Westfield’s lead to their final winning margin of 8-4.

Culpepper and Korey Morton (Norwalk, CT/University of Connecticut) both had two hits each on the night.

Liam Milewski (Old Lyme, CT/UConn-Avery Point) and Gary Costello (Chesire, CT/University of New Haven) provided a bright-spot for the Sea Unicorn pitching, combining for 4.2 innings of two-hit relief while striking out two Westfield batters.

The Sea Unicorns host their in-state rival New Britain Bees at Dodd Stadium on Friday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. Friday’s game is Military Appreciation Night, presented by the Better Business Bureau.
