Sea Unicorns Defeat In-State Rival Bees 9-2 On Military Appreciation

(Norwich, CT) -- The Norwich Sea Unicorns beat the New Britain Bees 9-2 on Friday night at Dodd Stadium on Military Appreciation Night.

The Sea Unicorns fell behind 1-0 early in the first, but scored twice on the second and never looked back. Hunter Yaworski (Brooklyn, CT/Mitchell College) walked with the bases loaded to push home Korey Morton (Norwalk, CT/University of Connecticut) with the Sea Unicorn’s first run. Jared Zimbardo (Middlesex, NJ/Quinnipiac University) scored on a wild pitch to give Norwich the lead. Zimbardo also drove in a run in the third with an RBI infield single in the right-side hole to extend the Sea Unicorns lead to 3-1.

New Britain cut the Norwich lead to 3-2 in the fifth on an RBI base hit to left by Danniel Rivera to score Jimmy Sullivan, but Michael Torniero (East Haven, CT/Central Connecticut State University) cut down the would-be tying run with a perfect throw home to nab Zach Donahue at the plate.

Anthony Porrino (Locust Valley, NY) then got that run back by blasting a solo shot over the left-field wall on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth to give the Sea Unicorns a 4-2 lead. Norwich broke the game open in the seventh with five runs on a two-run single to center by Zimbardo and a two-run double into the left-field corner by Yaworski. who then scored on the throw down to second on a stolen base by Kaelen Culpepper (Memphis, TB/Kansas State University).

Jimmy Wang (Beijing, CN/University of Connecticut) got the starting nod on the mound for the Sea Unicorns, going three innings while allowing one run on four hits and fanning three Bees batters. The Norwich bullpen was another bright spot on the night, as Kenny Heon (Montville, CT/Mitchell College), Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, CT/Mitchell College), and Spencer Fox (Manchester, CT/Southern Connecticut State University) combined for six innings of one-run baseball while allowing five hits and striking out four New Britain batters. Kaftan earned the win with 2.2 innings with no runs or walks on four hits, while Fox notched the save with 2.2 innings with one hit, no walks, and three strikeouts.

Porrino went 3-5 with three runs and an RBI and Zimbardo finished 2-3 with two runs and three RBI’s. Morton also had hits with two runs and Yaworski drove in three runs.

The Sea Unicorns return to Dodd Stadium Sunday, July 18 to take on the Westfield Starfires at 4:00 p.m. ET after a doubleheader on the road Saturday, July 17 against the Pittsfield Suns.
