(Norwich, CT) -- The Norwich Sea Unicorns used nine pitchers and sharp defense to beat the Westfield Starfires 6-3 at Dodd Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Sea Unicorns took an early lead the second on a two-out RBI single to right by Matt Malcom (East Lyme, CT/Eastern Connecticut State University) to knock in Jared Zimbardo (Middlesex, NJ/Quinnipiac University), who sparked the ralley with a base hit to center and a stolen second base. Zimbardo set the tone defensively with a great diving catch on sinking line drive by Christian Beal leading off the ball game for Westfield.

After the Startfires tied in the fifth, the Sea Unicorns answered with three runs a half-inning later to reclaim the lead for good. Kaelen Culpepper (Memphis, TN/Kansas State University) singled in between walks to Hunter Yaworksi and Tremayne Cobb (Huntington, MD/University of Hartford). Anthony Porrino (Locust Valley, NY) was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push across the go-ahead run and Zimbardo ripped a two-run double down the third-base line to extend the Norwich lead to 4-1.

In the sixth, the Sea Unicorns added more insurance when Michael Torniero (East Haven, CT/Central Connecticut State University) came home on a fielder’s choice by Cobb and Zimbardo delivered Culpepper with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.

The Starfires inched back into the ball game when Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, NJ/Babson) drove in Bey in the fifth and Cam Meyer (Newton, MA/Georgetown) knocked in two runs in the eighth for Westfield with a pinch-hit triple to right-centerfield. However, Tommy Hughes (Newington, CT/Southern Connecticut State University) bared down and retired the next six batters in a row to close the ballgame.

Bobby McBride (Brewster, NY/University of Connecticut), Darek Lallo (Warwick, RI/Lasell University), Jordan Marot (Johnston, RI/Franklin Pierce University), Kevin McNiff (Garden City, NY/University of New Haven), Ray Seward (Clinton, CT/Franklin Pierce University), Tyler Briggs (Franklin, CT/Sacred Heart University), Payton Sutman (Waterford, CT/College of Holy Cross), Connor Davey (Chesire, CT/Rhode Island College), and Hughes combined for nine-innings of six-hit baseball while allowing three run and four walks while striking out five. Sutman was credited with the win.

Zimbardo finished 2-3 with a run, a stolen base, and three RBI’s to go along with his sensational catch in the first.Culpepper went 2-4 with two runs and a stolen base, also making a terrific diving stop and throw to first to rob Jackson Slaughter of a hit in the third.
