(Norwich, CT) – The Norwich Sea Unicorns swept a doubleheader against the Westfield Starfires by winning a wild four-round Home Run Derby, taking game one 3-1 and completing the sweep when pitcher Bobby McBride (Brewster, NY/UConn) hit three out of Dodd Stadium in dramatic fashion.

Down to their final out in both rounds one and three, McBride hit dramatic home runs to force an ensuing rounds. In the fourth round, McBride hit the home run that sealed the victory for game two of the doubleheader.

The Sea Unicorns nearly won the game in seven innings, but the Starfires forced extra innings down to their final out on a bases-loaded walk to Cam Meyer. Norwich took the lead in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Josh Wetteman (Guilford, CT/Southern CT State University) for the game’s first run.

The Sea Unicorns started the day with a home run to spark the big day on a two-run towering blast to left by Kaelen Culpepper (Memphis, TN/Kansas State University) that gave Norwich an early 2-0 lead. Reece de Castro (Rutland, VT/Castleton University) added another run for the Sea Unicorns in the third when he laced an RBI single to center that scored Hunter Yaworski (Brooklyn, CT/Mitchell College), extending the Norwich lead to 3-0.

The Norwich pitching shined all day, beginning with game one starting pitcher Camren Varney (Manchester, NH/Mitchell College), who held Westfield hitless until the fifth. Varney went five strong innings while allowing just one run, one hit, and striking out two. He and Tommy Hughes (Newington, CT/Southern Connecticut State University) combined on the one-hitter, with Hughes recording a two-inning save with two perfect innings including striking out the side out in order in the sixth.

In game two, the Sea Unicorns made several clutch defensive plays to keep the Starfires off the board until the last out of the seventh. Josh Wettemann (Guilford, CT/Southern Connecticut State University) made a run-saving play in the bottom of the third at the plate, blocking a pitch in the dirt and racing to the dish to tag out a sliding Hunter Pasqualini who broke from third and deny him the game’s would-be first run. The Sea Unicorns also turned three double plays behind Connor Davey (Chesire, CT/Rhode Island College), who pitched six shutout innings in scattering four hits while striking out one.

Kenny Heon (Montville, CT/Mitchell College) pitched out of further trouble in the seventh, stranding the bases loaded after Westfield tied it by striking out Jaden Brown. Vincenzo Camera (East Haven, CT/Westfield State University) pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two.

Norwich goes on the road Monday 7/26 to take on the Pittsfield Suns in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm. The Sea Unicorns return to Dodd Stadium Tuesday 7/27 to take on the New Britain Bees at 7:00 p.m. Every Tuesday is Dollar Dog Night, presented by Kayem, with $1 hot dogs.
