(Norwich, CT) – The Norwich Sea Unicorns bounced back with a convincing 11-1 win over the Pittsfield Suns, earning a doubleheader split after dropping the opener 7-3 Sunday at Dodd Stadium.

Matt Malcom (East Lyme, CT/Eastern CT State University) went 2-3 with a run and two RBI and Bryan Loriga (Hialeah, FL/Elite Squad Academy) went 2-3 with a run, with a couple of strong defensive plays at second base as well.

Eddie Kaftan (Old Lyme, CT/Mitchell College) started on the mound and gave the Sea Unicorns a lift with a strong 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Spencer Fox (Manchester, CT/Southern CT State University) and Kalib Clark (Waterbury, CT/Post University) combined to pitch 2.2 of scoreless relief.

Malcom’s first RBI base hit to right highlighted a two-run first to set the tone for Norwich. He singled in another run in the third. John Mesagno (Tappan, NY/Eastern CT State University) added a pinch-hit RBI single as part of a three-run fifth. Kaelen Culpepper (Memphis, TN/Kansas State) delivered a two-run single and Noah Budzik (Cromwell, CT/University of New Haven) and TJ Keefe (Weymouth, MA/Pace University) added run-scoring singles as part of a five-run sixth.

In the 7-3 loss, Kyan Lodice (Omaha, NE/Kansas State) drove in all three runs for Norwich, including a two-run double off the left-centerfield wall in the seventh.

The Sea Unicorns hit the road for the next five games beginning Tuesday night at 6:30 pm against the Worcester Bravehearts. The Sea Unicorns return to Dodd Stadium next Sunday, June 13 at 4:00 pm for a rematch with the Pittsfield Suns. All kids 12 and under are invited to run the bases after the game, sponsored by Ben and Jerry’s.
