April 8, 2013

Rancho Cucamonga, CA (April 8th, 2013) -- Strong pitching continues to be the bread and butter for the 2013 Modesto Nuts as they pulled out a 3-2 win over the Quakes on Monday night in Rancho Cucamonga.

Tyler Gagnon (1-0), the fifth and final pitcher in the rotation, followed in the line with the rest of the staff in their debuts by lasting 6 2/3 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits.  The Brentwood, California, native sent down 13 straight through the middle innings until giving up single runs in the sixth and seventh.

The Nuts bullpen then combined to send down the final seven batters in order.  Will Rankin came on with a man at first and two outs in the seventh, and finished off the inning.  Ken Roberts worked a perfect eighth, and Scott Oberg retired the side in order in the ninth to rack up his second save in as many games.

Modesto scored all three of their runs in the second inning against Rancho Cucamonga starter Jarret Martin.  Jordan Ribera led off the inning with a walk, and Will Swanner followed by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman.  Tyler Massey delivered an RBI single to get the Nuts on the board, and Niko Gallego made it 2-0 with a sac-fly to right.  David Kandilas capped the inning with an RBI single to put the Nuts in front, 3-0.

Winners of three in a row, the Nuts (3-2) now have a chance to take the series in Rancho Cucamonga and guarantee a winning record on their seven game road trip to start the season.  LHP Tyler Anderson will make his second start of the season.  First pitch set for 7:05 p.m. You can listen to all of the action online at ModestoNuts.com, with Alex Margulies providing the call.
