Lake Elsinore, CA. -Reggie McClain recorded another quality start as the Modesto Nuts earned a four-game series split with the Lake Elsinore Storm thanks to a 4-3 victory at The Diamond on Monday night.
McClain (W, 5-2) pulled into a tie for first place in the California League with his fifth win of the season. The righty allowed just one earned run over six innings of work with four strikeouts and one walk. It was his fifth quality start in eight starts this season.
The win gives the Nuts (22-16) a three-game series lead over the Visalia Rawhide for first place in the North Division, their largest lead of the first half.
Bryan Bonnell (S, 1/1) fought off a late Storm (19-19) rally in the ninth. Austin Allen homered to make it a one-run game in the ninth inning. Javier Guerra and Ruddy Giron recorded back-to-back singles to put the tying run in scoring position, but Bonnell induced a pair of fly outs to end the threat and give the Nuts a four-game series split.
Chris Mariscal started the scoring for the Nuts against Storm starter Cal Quantrill (L, 3-2). Mariscal drove in two with a second-inning single. Mariscal finished with three hits in four at-bats. Eric Filia laced a triple in the third and scored on a balk. Quantrill worked a season-low four innings walking a season-high five batters while surrendering three runs.
Braden Bishop whacked a key RBI single to add to the Nuts' lead in the eighth which proved large after the Allen home run in the ninth. Bishop reached three times with two walks. Donnie Walton reached three times with two singles and a walk while scoring twice. Jay Baum was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
