Nuts Swept by Rawhide After 5-2 Loss

April 9, 2014

Ryan Gibbard gave the Nuts their best start of the year, but it was not enough in a 5-2 loss against the Rawhide on Wednesday night at Recreation Ballpark.

Gibbard (L, 0-2) tossed a Nuts' (0-7) season-high 5.2 innings and had given up just one run entering the sixth inning. With two outs in the frame Alex Glenn knocked a RBI triple off the right-field wall to break the tie and end Gibbard's night. Jacob Newberry entered for the Nuts next and Socrates Brito drilled the first pitch from Newberry over the right-field fence for a two-run, no-doubt home run.

In the seventh and eighth inning, the Nuts brought the tying run to the plate, but could not get the big base hit down the stretch when they needed it. They stranded eight runners on base and went hitless with runners in scoring position.

Brandon Sinnery (W, 1-0) tossed seven innings for the victorious Rawhide (5-2) while allowing seven hits but just one run on a sac fly from Derek Jones. Jimmie Sherfy (S, 2) started a bit wild in the ninth but settled down to lock down the save.

In the loss, Trevor Story had his second multi-hit game in the series by going 3-for-5 with a double and two singles. The loss completes the Rawhide's sweep of the Nuts as Modesto goes winless on their season-opening, seven-game road trip.

The Nuts come home for the first time this year on Thursday night. The first pitch against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com starts at 7:00 p.m. Andrew Brown will be on the bump for the Nuts. Righty Lindsey Caughel will start for the Quakes.
