Modesto, CA. - With two powerful punches and a gem, the Modesto Nuts defeated the Stockton Ports in game one of the Divisional Finals on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field.
Nathan Bannister (W, 1-0) retired the first twelve batters he faced in his start for the Nuts (1-0). Meanwhile, the Nuts took an early lead thanks to Eric Filia's two-out, solo home run in the third inning against Logan Shore.
In the fourth, the Ports (0-1) finally got their first baserunner on an infield single by Seth Brown. Mikey White struck out, Sandber Pimentel smashed a two-run homer to give the Ports their first and only lead.
In the bottom of the fifth against reliever Angel Duno (L, 0-1) the Nuts put the first two runners on. Jordan Cowan then smashed a three-run homer to right that gave the Nuts the lead.
Bannister worked 6 2/3 innings for the Nuts while striking out seven with no walks and just two runs allowed.
Matt Festa (S, 1/1) turned in the save in the ninth working around a RBI single that pushed across an unearned run.
