Nuts Walk Tight Rope in 3-2 Win

April 13, 2014

Modest, Ca. - The Nuts pitching staff danced around trouble all night long on their way to a 3-2 victory on Saturday night at John Thurman Field against the Quakes.

With the win, the Nuts will have a chance to earn their first series victory of the season. With the game tied entering the fifth, the Nuts (2-8) took the lead for good. Trevor Story, who reached safely in all four plate appearances, walked with one out. After stealing his third of four bases, Story scored on Matt Wessinger's RBI single. Wessinger scored the decisive run by taking a few hard steps to get his lead off third base which induced Quakes (4-6) righty Fabio Martinez to flinch and balk home Wessinger.

Matt Flemer (W, 1-0) turned in a nice start for the Nuts while walking on thin ice over 5.2 innings. The righty stranded multiple base runners in three separate innings and allowed just one unearned run while striking out five and walking two.

Fabio Martinez (L, 0-1) struck out six in his five innings of work but walked four and allowed three hits while surrendering three runs.

In the Nuts' first save opportunity of the year, Raul Fernandez (S, 1) continued the evening's trend of living on the edge. The closer walked speedster James Baldwin to begin the ninth. After Rob Garvey laid down a sac bunt and Jeremy Rathjen was hit by a pitch, the Quakes had the tying and go-ahead run on base with just one out. Fernandez struck out the next two batters swinging to end the inning and the game.

In the four-game series finale, righty Ben Alsup (0-2) will toss for the Nuts. Right-hander Chris Anderson (0-1) will be on the mound for the Quakes.
