Modesto, CA. - An 8-1 win over the Lancaster JetHawks completed a perfect 6-0 run to the California League Championship for the Modesto Nuts on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
In game three, the Nuts' (6-0) offense carried them to a sweep of the JetHawks (3-4) in the California League Championship Series.
In the first, the Nuts jumped on JetHawks' starter Jesus Tinoco (L, 0-2). Jordan Cowan led the first inning off with a double. He later stole second and came in to score on a throwing error by the catcher Chris Rabago. The Nuts loaded the bases after that and Joey Curletta drove in the second run on a sac fly.
The only run the JetHawks got against Robert Dugger (W, 1-0) came in the third. Scott Burcham doubled with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Garrett Hampson drove him home with an infield single. Dugger worked 5 2/3 innings allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In the fourth, the Nuts added another run when Luis Liberato recorded a RBI single to score Curletta who had doubled as part of a 3-for-4 night. Tinoco went 4 2/3 innings with eight hits leading to three runs. Tinoco struck out six and walked two.
The Nuts broke the game open in the seventh inning. After a run scored on a throwing error, Arturo Nieto smashed a three-run homer.
Art Warren slammed the door shut by striking out the side in the ninth. Joe Rizzo was named MVP of the Championship Series. The 19-year-old batted .538 (7x13) with one home run, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored.
It is the Nuts' first title since they were the Modesto A's in 2004 when they beat the JetHawks in five games. It is the ninth title in franchise history.
