Trevor Story hit for the cycle on Monday afternoon at Rawhide Ballpark, but it was not enough for the Modesto Nuts in a 14-12 loss to the Visalia Rawhide.
Story led the game off with a solo blast to left field. He recorded a pair of singles before smacking a RBI double in the fourth. In the seventh, Story ripped a triple to left center field to complete the cycle.
The Nuts (0-5) took the lead in the fourth inning of a back-and-forth battle when Jose Rivera ripped a grand slam home run over the left field fence.
In the seventh frame, the Rawhide plated six runs to take the lead for good. Alex Glenn knocked a three-run homer off Shane Broyles (L, 0-1) to tie the game. Raul Navarro followed with an RBI double to give the Rawhide the lead.
Rawhide (3-2) starter, Jesse Darrah, was knocked out of the game after recording four outs and giving up seven runs on eight hits. In the first, Jordan Ribera clubbed a two run homer. In the second inning, Rosell Herrera smacked a two-run single before scoring on Sean Dwyer's RBI triple to help send Darrah to the showers early.
The first four hitters in the first inning reached against Nuts starter Matt Flemer. During that stretch, Brandon Drury smashed a two-run double off the wall and scored when Rudy Flores whacked a two-run homer.
Alving Mejias threw well for the Nuts over 3.2 innings, he did not allow a run, walked none and struck out two while giving up just two hits.
Henry Garcia (W,1-0) worked three innings out of the bullpen and shut out the Nuts while allowing just one hit.
On Tuesday evening, the Nuts go for their first win of the year in the middle affair of a three-game series. Ben Alsup (0-1) gets his second start of the year.
