Streak comes to an end in High Desert

ADELANTO, CA (June 27th, 2013) -- The Mavericks jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, and although the Nuts put together a late rally, they fell short in a 9-7 loss at Mavericks Stadium on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Nuts (7-1, 39-39) seven-game winning streak to start the second-half was snapped.

After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on doubles by Will Swanner and Trevor Story, the Mavericks responded by sending their entire order to the plate in a six-run outburst against Tyler Gagnon.

Gagnon (6-6) went on to suffer his worst damage of the year, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in five innings of work for the loss.

Jamal Austin drove in a pair of runs with two outs in the second to give the Mavericks the lead, and Patrick Brady followed with a 3-run homer to break it open.

High Desert added a run in the third and two in the fourth to pull ahead by seven runs by the start of the fifth.

Modesto got a run back against Mavs starter Trevor Miller in the fourth as Ryan Casteel led off with a single, and came around to score on a single by Story and a throwing error by right-fielder Kevin Rivers.

That's all the Nuts would manage against Miller (4-6) in six innings of work, as he picked up the victory.

Modesto battered reliever Seon Gi Kim in the seventh and eighth, scoring five runs against him to get back in the contest. Brian Humphries had a 2-run double in the seventh, and Casteel added an RBI triple. Harold Riggins blasted a 2-run homer in the eighth to get the Nuts back within two. But, Jeremey Dobbs came in to relieve Kim and retired the final five batters of the game to notch his first save of the year.

The Nuts will look to get back on track in game two of the four-game series on Friday night. RHP Chris Jensen (2-4, 4.00) will make the start for Modesto. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
