Streak Stops at Nine After 5-4 Win

August 6, 2014

Modest, CA. - Matt Flemer and Jordan Ribera teamed up to lead the Nuts to a 5-4, nail-biting win against the JetHawks on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field to end a season-long nine game skid.

Jordan Ribera extended the Nuts (11-34; 34-81) lead with a crucial two-out, two-run double in the fifth inning against JetHawks (25-20; 69-45) starter Kyle Westwood (L, 8-7).

Matt Flemer (W, 10-8) was spectacular on Tuesday night, allowing just a first inning solo home run in the first seven innings of work. With Flemer out for the eighth, the JetHawks mounted their comeback attempt.

After allowing just two hits in the first seven frames, Flemer gave up two bloop singles and a walk in the eighth. Flemer left with the bases loaded in favor of Alving Mejias. Mejias allowed all three inherited runners to score, capped by another bloop single, this time off the bat of Roberto Pena who drove in two to bring the JetHawks to within one. After another single, Mejias was removed from the game.

Rayan Gonzalez (S, 9) entered to try and lock in a terribly difficult four-out save. With the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position, Gonzalez induced a ground out by Tyler White to end the eighth-inning rally. In the ninth, Gonzalez pitched around a one-out single while striking out two to officially end the Nuts' nine-game losing streak.

The Nuts go for the series victory on Wednesday evening against the JetHawks in the three-game series finale. Newcomer Mike Piazza will toss for the Nuts. Lefty Kent Emanuel will throw for the JetHawks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. To listen on your iPhone or iPad listen live here.
