Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City Dodgers snapped a four-game losing skid Sunday night with a 4-2 win against the New Orleans Baby Cakes in the series finale between the teams at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
First baseman Edwin Ríos hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Dodgers their first lead of the night, 2-1, and pitcher Wilmer Font held the Baby Cakes to one run over six innings as he picked up his seventh victory of the season.
New Orleans led the series, 3-0, and had won six of the last seven games against Oklahoma City entering Sunday's finale as the Dodgers went on to avoid a series sweep.
The Baby Cakes (38-56) took the game's first lead when Brian Anderson homered out to left field in the second inning, putting New Orleans ahead, 1-0, in front of a crowd of 5,110.
The Dodgers (50-43) answered in the bottom of the inning. Max Muncy singled with one out for Oklahoma City and Rios later hit a towering two-run homer out to right field to put the Dodgers in front, 2-1. The home run was Rios' second with Oklahoma City since joining the team July 7.
The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning for Alex Verdugo. Verdugo hit into a fielder's choice to New Orleans second baseman Christian Colón. Kyle Farmer scored on the play and Mike Freeman scored when the throw from Colon bounced and got past catcher Tomás Telis to extend the Dodgers' lead to 4-1. Colon was charged with a throwing error.
A RBI double by Peter Mooney brought home the second run of the night for the Baby Cakes, cutting Oklahoma City's lead to 4-2, but that would stand as the final run of the game.
Font (7-5) got the win for the Dodgers in his first start since the Triple-A All-Star Game, allowing one run and three hits. He did not issue a walk and recorded eight strikeouts. Font entered the game with a PCL-leading 119 strikeouts this season.
Josh Ravin pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Oklahoma City, allowing one run and two hits before Joe Broussard retired all three New Orleans batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning for his second save with the Dodgers.
New Orleans starting pitcher William Cuevas (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs and five hits over 6.0 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
Willie Calhoun collected a hit Sunday to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games. Verdugo drew a walk to extend his on-base streak to 35 consecutive games. He entered Sunday's game with the second-longest on-base streak in Triple-A this season.
The Dodgers continue their homestand and open a four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
