RedHawks Open Homestand with 2-0 Win

Oklahoma City earns second shutout victory of the season
May 6, 2014

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City RedHawks opened up their eight-game homestand with a 2-0 win against the Memphis Redbirds Tuesday in front of 3,618 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The shutout win was the second of the season for the RedHawks (18-15), who scored both of their runs in the fourth inning.

RedHawks starting pitcher Jake Buchanan (2-3) held the Redbirds (15-17) scoreless over 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and striking out five in the win.

Buchanan combined with pitchers Rhiner Cruz, Kevin Chapman and Josh Zeid for the shutout, which was Oklahoma City's second in the last four home games. Zeid recorded his fifth save of the season. The RedHawks bullpen has now allowed just three runs and 22 hits over the last 35 innings with 40 strikeouts.

The RedHawks offense opened up the game in the fourth inning as five consecutive players reached base.

Domingo Santana singled on a line drive to right field and Gregorio Petit followed with a soft liner to center field.

Max Stassi then singled on a grounder to left field to score Santana. Petit eluded a tag on a run down attempt between second and third base to advance to third. He then scored on a Carlos Perez single later in the inning for a 2-0 RedHawks lead.

In the fifth inning, Robbie Grossman stole second base to notch Oklahoma City's first swipe in 14 straight games.

Each team finished the game with six hits. Stephen Piscotty went 3-for-4 for the Redbirds.

Memphis starting pitcher Tim Cooney (3-2) allowed two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out four in the loss.

Tuesday opened a four-game series against Memphis, as the RedHawks improved to 8-1 in series openers this season.

The series between the teams continues at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
