COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (August 17) - The Sky Sox used a big inning to break a 2-2 tie, as Colorado Springs defeated the Storm Chasers 8-5 on Friday night at Security Services Field.
Colorado Springs struck first in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo home run by Tyrone Taylor.
Omaha tied it in the top of the 3rd. Parker Morin doubled, and Brian Goodwin hit a ground ball that was booted by 2nd baseman Eric Sogard, allowing Morin to score.
The Sky Sox took a 2-1 lead in the last of the 3rd on a Nate Orf single, an error by Ramón Torres, and a single by Tyrone Taylor.
But the Chasers responded immediately in the 4th. Elier Hernandez walked, Ramon Torres singled, Donnie DeWees put down a sacrifice bunt, and Humberto Arteaga singled in Hernandez to make it 2-2.
Trevor Oaks pitched 6 solid innings for Omaha, allowing 2 runs, 7 hits, and no walks. He struck out 2.
Aaron Brooks also pitched well for Colorado Springs; he was charged with 2 runs on 9 hits in 6.1 frames. He struck out 2 and walked 1.
The game turned in the home team's favor in the bottom of the 7th, as the Sky Sox plated 5 runs against Josh Staumont (L, 1-5). Dylan Moore singled, stole 2nd, and went to 3rd on a wild pitch. Quintin Berry walked and stole 2nd, and another wild pitch brought Moore home and sent Berry to 3rd. Nate Orf walked, and when he stole 2nd, Parker Morin's throw skipped into center field for an error, scoring Berry and putting Orf at 3rd. Christian Bethancourt followed with an RBI double, and after Eric Stout relieved Staumont, Tyrone Taylor capped the inning with a 2-run homer, making it 7-2.
Another run came across for the Sky Sox in the bottom of the 8th, on a triple by Dylan Moore and a single by Quintin Berry.
Omaha native Mike Zagurski (W, 1-1) earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief.
The Chasers scored in the top of the 9th, as Ariel Hernández walked Donnie DeWees, Parker Morin, Billy Burns , and Nicky Lopez to walk in a run. Frank Schwindel followed with a 2-run single, cutting the deficit to 8-5. With the tying run at the plate, however, Tristan Archer (S, 3) recorded the final out to finally seal the win for Colorado Springs.
The Storm Chasers (58-65) will continue the series in Colorado tomorrow night at 7:00. RHP Zach Lovvorn (1-6, 7.23) will pitch for Omaha, and RHP Aaron Wilkerson (3-4, 2.48) will toss for the Sky Sox.
