Storm Chasers fall to I-Cubs in wild series opener

Papillion, Neb. – In a game that saw 28 combined hits and 23 combined runs, the Storm Chasers dropped the series opener to the I-Cubs. Omaha (69-73) fell 12-11 to Iowa (65-77) on Tuesday evening from Werner Park.

The Iowa got on the scoreboard first with solo homer of the bat of Alexander Canario in the first. Narciso Crook added another with a double to jump ahead 2-0 before Omaha came to bat.

The I-Cubs added more in the top of the third when John Hicks hit a three-run homer to open a 5-0 lead.

Omaha knotted the score in the bottom of the third, when catcher Freddy Fermin started the rally with a solo home run. Shortstop Maikel Garcia brought in second baseman Iván Castillo before left fielder Brent Rooker tacked on another with an RBI single to score Garcia. Center fielder Dairon Blanco finished off the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI double, leaving the score at 5-5 heading to the fourth.

The score would not stay tied long, with Iowa putting up a four-spot in the fourth. Canario hit his second home run in the game before Brennen Davis hit a sacrifice fly. The I-Cubs added a pair in the fifth with both runs coming in on a John Hicks double.

Right fielder Brewer Hicklen hit an RBI single to score Rooker in the bottom of the sixth. Fermin added an RBI to score Blanco before I. Castillo pushed Hicklen across the plate with single. The scoring in the frame was capped off with Garcia hitting a sacrifice fly to make the score 11-9.

Canario hit his third home run of the game to make the score 12-9 in the top of the eighth.

Hicklen doubled in the seventh to score Blanco before Rooker drew an RBI walk in the eighth to bring the deficit to one.

Omaha came away empty in the ninth, dropping the series opener 12-11.

The Storm Chasers and I-Cubs will play a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. with coverage starting at 11:45 p.m. on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.

On Saturday, September 24, the Storm Chasers will host Fan Appreciation Night presented by Werner Enterprises, with a post-game concert from Flo Rida.
