(Great Falls) - The Orem Owlz were held scoreless until the ninth inning in a 10-1 loss to the Great Falls Voyagers in game two of a four-game series at Centene Stadium in Great Falls, Montana on Wednesday night.
Cody Eckerson made his first professional start for the Owlz and worked around an error to toss a scoreless first inning in his Owlz debut.
After tossing a scoreless first inning, Owlz starter Cody Eckerson retired the first batter in the second inning before Romy Gonzalez singled to right. It appeared as though Eckerson would get out of the inning with a groundball but it was misplayed, keeping the inning alive. Jhoandro Alfaro then gave the Voyagers a 3-0 lead by hitting a three-run homer to left. Great Falls went on to score three more in the inning, extending their lead to 6-0.
The Owlz offense was held in check by Voyager's pitching as Great Falls carried a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning. Great Falls added to their lead with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Corey Zangari was hit by a pitch, Alex Destino and Romy Gonzalez singled and Amado Nunez tripled while Alfaro doubled, upping the lead to 10-0.
Kevin Maitan opened the top of the ninth inning with a double and then scored when Francisco Del Valle doubled, cutting the deficit to 10-1.
Matt Portland (1-0) earned the win for the Voyagers while Cody Eckerson (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Owlz. The Owlz and Voyagers continue the series on Thursday night at 7:00 from Centene Stadium.
