The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have announced the 2017 coaching staff for the Orem Owlz. Tom Nieto has been named the Manager with Matt Spring and Manny Del Campo as hitting coaches and Jonathan Van Eaton and Michael Burns as pitching coaches. Nieto was a catcher for the 1985 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. He managed the Rochester Red Wings, Twins Triple-A team from 2009-2011 and was manager of the GCL Yankees 2012 and 2013.
"We are pleased to welcome a fresh new staff to the Orem Owlz family," said General Manager Rick Berry, "along with one face familiar to Owlz fans." Jonathon Van Eaton pitched for the 2013 Orem Owlz. On his return to Orem Eaton said, "I'm looking forward to starting a new journey of player development with the Angels and continuing the winning tradition of the Orem Owlz." Eaton recently was the pitching coach in Tempe for the Arizona League Angels.
Matt Spring returns to Utah after spending 10 years as a catcher in the Boston Red Sox organization. Spring played on the 2004 Dixie State National Championship for current BYU Baseball coach Mike Littlewood,
Manny Del Campo played in the minors from 2004-2012 for teams both in the United States and Mexico.
Michael Burns brings a wide variety of experience having pitched in MLB between 2005-2009 for the Houston Astros,Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers. He was also a member of the coaching staff for the Easton Blackdogs at Caira Baseball Academy.
The Angels will name a Strength and Conditioning coach and Athletic Trainer at a later date.
