Furious Pelicans Rally Downs P-Nats 9-5 in Finale

Myrtle Beach Scores Six Runs Late to Claim Victory on Getaway Day

Myrtle Beach, SC-A furious late rally by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (14-9, 9-4) downed the Potomac Nationals (10-13, 6-7) on Sunday afternoon inside TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark as the Pelicans scored three runs in both the 7th and the 8th innings to take the series finale on getaway day by the final score of 9-5.

 

Nationals RHP A.J. Cole, who did not receive a decision, pitched well allowing three earned runs over 6.0 innings in a quality start while throwing 99 pitches. Cole walked two and tied his season high with seven strikeouts.  

 

Potomac plated three runs in the 3rd inning to strike first as CF Randolph Oduber ripped a two-run double into the left field corner before a wild pitch by LHP Victor Payano brought Oduber in to score.

 

Myrtle Beach answered with one run in their half of the 3rd frame courtesy of an RBI single by 2B Rougned Odor, who finished the contest with a 2-for-4, one run, three RBI line.

 

The P-Nats added to their lead with one run in the 5th on an RBI single by SS Jason Martinson belted into center field.

 

The Pelicans put two runs on the board in the home half of the 5th when 3B Edwin Garcia tagged an RBI double to the left field wall and Odor knocked an RBI groundout to first base.

 

With Potomac holding a 4-3 lead, the Nationals got another insurance run in the 7th stanza when 3B Cutter Dykstra nailed a broken-bat RBI single passed SS Luis Sardinas.

 

Then, against RHP Colin Bates (0-3, BS 1), the losing pitcher who was hit with a blown save, faced six hitters and allowed three earned runs including an RBI groundout to Garcia and an RBI sacrifice fly lifted by DH Trever Adams, which ended up scoring an additional run when Oduber's throw skipped off the dirt and to the backstop.

 

With Myrtle Beach leading 6-5, the Pelicans poured on three more runs in the 8th inning as eight men came to the plate against LHP Ben Hawkins. Sardinas cranked an RBI sac fly before back-to-back RBI singles by Garcia and Odor.

 

The winning pitcher, Myrtle Beach RHP Jon Edwards (1-0) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and allowed two base hits.

 

Oduber was hit by a pitch in the 9th inning on the wrist and remained in the game. He was the only baserunner to reach.        

 

The Potomac Nationals will open a seven-game homestand beginning with a four-game set against the Carolina Mudcats (Cleveland Indians) on Monday night.

 

Potomac RHP Blake Schwartz (1-0, 0.00) will deal against Carolina LHP Shawn Morimando (1-2, 1.80).
