June 28, 2014
Myrtle Beach, SC---The Potomac Nationals and Myrtle Beach Pelicans were suspended in the top of the 5th inning at Pelicans Ballpark on Friday night in the series finale due to consistent rainfall with the Pelicans leading 6-3.
The Nationals had runners at first and second base and LF Randolph Oduber at the plate with one out when play was halted with hard rain starting to pound TicketReturn.com Field.
There has been no completion date announced yet for this suspended contest.
The Nationals do not travel back to Pelicans Ballpark during the 2014 regular season.
The Nationals scored first off LHP Victor Payano in the 2nd inning on an RBI single chopped up the middle by 2B Khayyan Norfork.
Payano went 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking five and fanning three.
The Pelicans worked Potomac starter. RHP Brian Rauh for six earned runs on seven hits on the night including four runs in the 2nd inning. Myrtle Beach 1B Preston Beck yanked a two-run home run out to right field, his 7th jack of the season. RF Chris Grayson and CF Chris Garia added RBI singles in the frame.
One inning later, Pelicans C Jorge Alfaro ripped a run-scoring single into center field and DH David Lyon cranked an RBI double into the right field corner giving the home club a 6-1 lead.
In the 5th against Payano the double of DH Tony Renda came home on a missed catcher error charged to the southpaw on a throw back to the mound from Alfaro before 1B Shawn Pleffner lined a single to plate SS Stephen Perez. Perez had sprayed a one-base knock through the six hole to get aboard before being driven in to make the rubber match finale a 6-3 game.
Payano was knocked out and Pelicans RHP Ryan Bores threw a fastball up and in on Oduber before the skies opened up pausing play at 8:48pm.
