Taylor Walk-Off Single Sinks the Pelicans 3-2 in Series Finale

CF Michael Taylor Swept a Game-Winning Single to Score LF Billy Burns in Bottom of the
May 5, 2013

Woodbridge, VA-Potomac CF Michael Taylor played the hero in the bottom of the 9th for the Potomac Nationals (15-15, 9-8) sweeping a walk-off single to score LF Billy Burns to sink the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-13, 8-9) at Pfitzner Stadium in the series finale on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 3-2.

Nationals RHP Taylor Hill was outstanding through 7.0 innings allowing just one earned run on two hits, a pair of walks, and seven strikeouts. Hill surrendered a solo home run to C Kellin Deglan in the 2nd inning, an opposite field solo blast, his third dinger of the season against Potomac pitching, and a single to DH Trever Adams.

Hill did not factor into the decision.

The P-Nats got on the board with one run in the 3rd inning courtesy of an RBI single nailed into center field scoring 2B Khayyan Norfork, who reached on a fielding error by 3B Drew Robinson.

Norfork scored the Nationals' second run in the 5th frame as SS Adrian Sanchez sprayed an RBI single into right field.

Pelicans RHP Jared Eickhoff, who did not receive a decision, allowed two runs, one earned, in 6.0 innings allowing five base hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

With Potomac up 2-1 in the top of the 8th inning and RHP Richie Mirowski (2-2), the winning pitcher, on the mound, Robinson waved and missed at a breaking ball that C Cole Leonida couldn't corral. Leonida attempted to complete the strikeout by throwing down to first base, and his errant throw hit the back of Robinson allowing CF Jake Skole to come in to score after reaching base via a double down the right field line.

Off the losing pitcher, RHP Jon Edwards (1-1), Burns drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 9th and stole second base. In motion headed to third base, Taylor swung and drove a bouncing ball through the hole at shortstop to bring Burns to home plate and christen the walk-off triumph.

Sunday afternoon's last at-bat win was the second walk-off victory in 2013 for the Potomac Nationals.

After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Nationals travel to Wilmington, DE on Tuesday to face off with the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Kansas City Royals) in a three-game series at Frawley Stadium from Tuesday through Thursday before returning home to The Pfitz to begin a seven-game homestand.
