LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In one of their great come-from-behind wins of the season, the Pawtucket Red Sox erased three different multi-run deficits, took their first lead in the eighth inning and downed the Louisville Bats, 10-8, on Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field to win the rubber game of the three-game set.
The PawSox (28-37) pounded out a season-high 17 hits and received 4.2 shutout innings of one-hit ball from their bullpen to topple the Bats (26-40).
In the fifth game of his rehab assignment, Tzu-Wei Lin (knee) played shortstop for seven innings and went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a single.
Bryce Brentz (2-for-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, BB) smashed a pair of opposite-field, two-run homers - his first multi-homer game of the season. The veteran slugger has 11 long balls this season and upped his OPS to .861. Josh Tobias (4-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) recorded his first four-hit game in the Red Sox organization. Rusney Castillo (3-for-5, R, HR, 2 RBI) continued a torrid series in which he piled up nine hits. Jantzen Witte (2-for-5, R) singled twice.
Pawtucket starter Erasmo Ramírez allowed four earned runs in 4.1 innings before the bullpen dominated the rest of the way. In his return from the majors, Josh Taylor fanned three in 1.2 hitless innings. Domingo Tapia (W, 1-0) - with a heavy sinker and changeup - punched out two in a nine-pitch, 1-2-3 inning. Jenrry Mejia handled the eighth, and Trevor Kelley (S, 3) lowered his ERA to 1.10 with a three-up, three-down ninth.
Reds rehabbing reliever Robert Stephenson (L, 0-1) gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Louisville went ahead 2-0 in the first, only for the PawSox to score two in the top of the second. The Bats then scored three in the home half of the inning, only for the PawSox to tie the game 5-5 in the top of the third. After Louisville got three in the fifth, Pawtucket answered with three in the sixth. Then in the eighth, Castillo delivered the go-ahead RBI single. In the ninth, Tobias pulled an RBI double to the right-field wall to tack on insurance.
The PawSox now continue their road trip in Indianapolis with a 7:15 p.m. series opener Friday against the Pirates Triple-A affiliate, the Indians, at Victory Field. PawSox left-hander Kyle Hart (2-1, 3.71 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Indians righty Eduardo Vera (3-4, 6.14). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
