PawSox to become Osos Polares de Pawtucket on all but one Tuesday in 2019

March 18, 2019

For the second straight year, Minor League Baseball has selected the Pawtucket Red Sox to participate in Copa de la Diversion. Once again in 2019, the PawSox will change their name to Osos Polares de Pawtucket for Tuesday home games at McCoy Stadium.

For the second straight year, Minor League Baseball has selected the Pawtucket Red Sox to participate in Copa de la Diversion. Once again in 2019, the PawSox will change their name to Osos Polares de Pawtucket for Tuesday home games at McCoy Stadium.

This year, in conjunction with "Celebrate Rhode Island", Osos Polares nights will include new features - especially for children - as all kids (aged 12 & under) will be admitted free for the first four Osos games at McCoy this season on April 16 & 23 and May 14 & 28.
The name Osos Polares de Pawtucket, "Polar Bears of Pawtucket" in English, was revealed last year and proved to be a big hit for fans and players alike as McCoy Stadium had a special vibe during the Tuesday Osos games in 2018.
The PawSox will wear newly-designed Osos Polares de Pawtucket game caps and jerseys for every Tuesday home game during the 2019 season (with the exception of July 2). On those nights, the PawSox will celebrate the team's surrounding Hispanic community by playing Hispanic music throughout the ballpark, making PA announcements & lineups in Spanish, and by providing video board information in both English & Spanish. In addition, Mondor Way will host Latin-based food trucks before the game, Hispanic PawSox players will be highlighted through interviews and fun-facts, and Hispanic-focused non-profits will be recognized for their work in the community.
This morning at a press conference at Veterans Elementary School in Central Falls, RI (a school that has about a 75% Hispanic student population), the new team caps and jerseys featuring the Osos Polares logo were unveiled as mascots Paws and Sox provided a Monday morning thrill for the kids at Veterans.
Among the attendees expected at the press conference were Central Falls Mayor James Diossa, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien, State Senators Sandra Cano and Elizabeth Crowley, Pawtucket Representative Carlos Tobon, Central Falls City Council President Maria Rivera, RI Hispanic Chamber President Oscar Mejias, and several executives from the PawSox including President Dr. Charles Steinberg and Executive Vice President/Real Estate Development & Business Affairs Dan Rea.
Later today, Minor League Baseball will announce the on-field identities of the teams participating in the "Copa de la Diversion" ("Fun Cup") season-long event series for 2019. "Copa de la Diversión" is the cornerstone of MiLB's "Es Divertido Ser Un Fan" ("It's Fun to be A Fan") Hispanic fan engagement initiative.
The PawSox are honored to be selected once again as a participating team. This initiative, a new form of outreach to the Hispanic Community, is specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams' local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities.
The first game played by the 2019 Osos Polares de Pawtucket will be Tuesday evening, April 16 at 6:05pm at McCoy Stadium vs. the Buffalo Bisons. The game will be played during School Vacation Week and children, aged 12 & under, will be admitted free of charge.
Fans can visit our Osos Polares page to see more information with page versions in both English and Spanish. In addition, the new Osos Polares de Pawtucket merchandise and gear is also available.
