Cardinals Shutdown by Fernandez, Hammerheads 4-0

August 30, 2012
The Palm Beach Cardinals (32-34) dropped the opener to the Jupiter Hammerheads (36-27), 4-0 on Thursday night.

With the loss the Cardinals were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, as four Hammerheads pitchers combine to toss a six-hit shutout.

Seth Blair (1-3) made his sixth start of the season, tossing three innings, allowing one run and striking out two. He picked up the loss, as he gave up back-to-back-to-back singles in the top of the second to allow the first run to cross the board. First baseman Brian McKonkey drove in the first run with an RBI single.

Blair loaded the bases but escaped further damage by recording three out without allowing another run to score.

Jupiter would open the lead in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on two hits and two errors. Marcell Ozuna provided the big blow, as he doubled with the bases loaded to extend the Hammerheads lead to 4-0.

Offensively, the Cardinals were stymied by the Jupiter staff. Jose Fernandez (7-1) picked up the victory, tossing five innings, allowing four runs, walking four and striking out three. The bullpen faired even better, as Tyler Higgins, Raudel Lazo and Scott McGough held the Cardinals to two hits, while striking out three.

James Ramsey led the offense with two hits and two walks, while five other Cardinals picked up hits on the night.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow night as they play host to the Jupiter Hammerheads at 6:35 p.m. Kyle Hald (3-4) takes the ball for the Cardinals.
