Gonzalez, Cardinals Beat Miracle 5-3

Tice, Spitz, Olivera All Notch 2 Hits

Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (54-78, 22-42) beat the Fort Myers Miracle (67-66, 33-31) on Monday evening by a final of 5-3.

The Rundown

Derian Gonzalez (1-2, 1.46 ERA) tossed a strong 6.2 innings of three run ball (two earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out five as he got a victory, his first in the Florida State League.

The Miracle jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Nick Gordon hit a one out single and scored on a Trey Vavra single that Oscar Mercado bobbled in the outfield. Gonzalez then got out of the jam and trailed by one after the top of the first.

The Cardinals then jumped on top in the third as Andrew Sohn and Mercado hit back to back one out singles. Danny Diekroeger drew a walk after Juan Herrera flew out to shallow center. Casey Grayson drove in the first Palm Beach run by drawing a bases loaded walk and Mercado scored on a balk by Luke Westphal. The Cardinals led 2-1 after three.

The Miracle then tied it in the fourth on a wild pitch by Gonzalez and went ahead 3-2 in the fifth scoring on another wild pitch. The Cardinals retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they brought around three runs in the inning. Thomas Spitz led the inning off with a single and got to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. Dylan Tice doubled in Spitz to tie the game. The Miracle brought in new pitcher, Confesor Lara, with nobody out in the sixth. Chris Rivera hit a one out double to score Tice and later scored on a throwing error by Lara. The Cardinals led 5-3 after six.

Cody Schumacher and Dakota Hudson closed it out in the eighth and ninth and the Cardinals grabbed a 5-3 victory.

3 - The Cardinals and Miracle combined for eight runs on the night, but only three were recorded from an RBI.

  • Tice and Rivera both hit doubles in the game, Tice's fifth and Rivera's second.
  • Gonzalez notched his first FSL victory of his career.
