Chris Garia added to the All-Star team

Outfielder becomes ninth Pelican selected to team
June 13, 2014

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JUNE 13, 2014) - The Carolina League announced the finalized Carolina League All-Star Roster on Wednesday, and Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder Chris Garia was added to the roster. Garia is the ninth Pelican selected to the team and takes the place of the injured Pelicans outfielder Nick Williams, who is currently on the disabled list.

Garia, 21, picks up his third career All-Star nod. The Willemstad, Curacao native was selected to the 2011 Dominican Summer League Midseason All-Star Game as well as the 2013 Northwest League Midseason All-Star roster. The primary leadoff batter for the Birds this year, Garia is batting .278 in 48 games with a league-best nine triples to go along with three doubles and a home run. The nine triples is tied for the most in the League since Alex Presley knocked 11 triples for Lynchburg in 2009. Garia has a team-best 20 steals, trailing only Lynchburg's Jose Peraza and Kyle Wren for the league lead. He is tied for the 28th in the minors in steals and leads all Rangers, minor leaguers and major leaguers combined. Getting regular playing time after Odubel Herrera's promotion on May 12, Garia hit .300 in the month of May, and is now sixth on the team with 31 runs scored. He has logged time in left field and center field, leading the Pelicans with 40 starts in center.

Williams, along with Royce Bolinger (also on the DL), Joey Gallo (in Double-A), and Chi Chi Gonzalez (in Double-A) will not participate in the game. Garia joins Jorge Alfaro, Preston Beck, Alexander Claudio, and Andrew Faulkner who will make the trip for Tuesday's California League / Carolina League All-Star Game presented by Bank of America in Wilmington, Delaware at Frawley Stadium, the home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

The Pelicans continue their first-half finale series in Frederick on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium, needing one win to match a franchise records for wins in a half.

The next Pelicans home game is Thursday, June 19 when the Wilmington Blue Rocks come to town for the first of the three games. The quick three-game homestand features an appearance by Mountain Man, from A&E's Duck Dynasty, on Saturday June 21, presented by WMBF News.
