Former Pelican Tseng to make first MLB start

Right-hander is 12th Pelicans alumnus to make big league debut in 2017

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (September 14, 2017) - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans right-handed pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng has been promoted to the Chicago Cubs and will make his first-ever major league start at 8:05 p.m. ET Thursday when the Cubs host the New York Mets from Wrigley Field. Tseng is the 12th former Myrtle Beach farmhand to make his big league debut in 2017, and the 168th player to suit up for the Pelicans and play in The Show.

The Cubs' Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Tseng went 13-4 with a 2.54 ERA in 24 starts between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa this season. The right-hander ceded just 127 hits and 38 walks against 122 strikeouts in 145.1 innings.

Signed by Chicago out of Taiwan in 2013, Tseng helped the Pelicans claim the 2015 Mills Cup Championship, posting a 7-7 record and 3.55 ERA. In 22 starts that year with Myrtle Beach, Tseng whiffed 87 against 30 walks, yielding 115 hits in 119.0 frames.

Ranked by as the No. 13 prospect in the Cubs' organization, Tseng joins his former Myrtle Beach teammate Jacob Hannemann (September 9, Mariners) in making his major league debut this week. Utility players Drew Robinson (Texas) and Chris Bostick (Pittsburgh), left-handed pitcher Chad Bell (Detroit), infielder/outfielder Ian Happ (Cubs), outfielders Lewis Brinson (Milwaukee), Mark Zagunis (Cubs), Nick Williams (Philadelphia), catcher Victor Caratini (Cubs) and right-handed pitchers Paul Blackburn (Oakland) and Dillon Maples (Cubs) are also former Myrtle Beach farmhands to make their big league debut this season.
