Three-homer game highlights superb week for third baseman
April 28, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. (APRIL 28, 2014) - The Carolina League announced on Monday that Myrtle Beach Pelicans third baseman Joey Gallo has won the league's Player of the Week award for the week of April 21-27. The award is the second picked up by Gallo in three weeks this season; he earned the award for a torrid stretch to start the season, taking home the honor for the span of April 3-13.

Gallo, 20, hit .364, going 8-for-22 during the week with three homers, a double, a triple, 9 RBI, seven runs scored, and eight walks. He led the Carolina League in home runs and was second in slugging percentage (.909) and OPS (1.425) for the week. The Henderson, Nevada native was tied for first in walks with teammates Preston Beck and Odubel Herrera and was fourth in on-base percentage (.516). In the Pelicans 21-6 victory over Frederick on Wednesday, April 23, Gallo went 3-for-4 with three homers, six RBI, and three walks. It was his third three-homer game of his career, first this year. It was his 11th multi-homer game and second of the season.

As of Monday, the third baseman is hitting .333 with nine home runs, 22 RBI, and 24 runs scored. He is tied for second in the minors in homers, is first in slugging (.782), second in OPS (1.233), fourth in runs scored, and 12th in walks (20).

On six occasions last year, the league tabbed Pelicans players with the league's weekly awards. Alec Asher won Pitcher of the Week twice, and Drew Robinson, Luke Jackson, Victor Payano, and Luis Sardinas all won a weekly award once. Only Payano is still with the Birds; the other four players are all with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders and Sardinas saw time with the Texas Rangers recently, making his major league debut on April 20.

Gallo was twice named South Atlantic League Player of the Week in 2013, first for the week of June 10-16 and later for the week of August 26-September 2 as a member of the Class-A Hickory Crawdads.

The Pelicans and Gallo play game three of their series in Wilmington on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. at Frawley Stadium against the Blue Rocks.

The next Pelicans home game is on Thursday, May 1, when the Pelicans host the Frederick Keys for a four-game series. Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are still available to see the Pelicans in 2014.
