Pelicans score both runs for Carolina League in loss

Alfaro clubs only extra-base hit in 3-2 defeat
June 17, 2014

WILMINGTON, DE. (JUNE 17, 2014) - The Carolina League All-Stars fell to the California League All-Stars 3-2 on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium in the California League / Caroline League All-Star Game. Five Pelicans made the trip for the game, and all five participated in the game. Jorge Alfaro led the Carolina League attack with the lone extra-base hit and scored a run. Preston Beck singled and walked in two trips to the plate, and Chris Garia singled and scored a run, playing the whole game as the right fielder. All three started the game. Andrew Faulkner and Alexander Claudio both faced the minimum in their scoreless innings.

The California League jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings on an RBI single and two-run homer from Kyle Waldrop.

Alfaro reached on an error his first time at the plate. With the Carolina League trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning, the starting catcher smashed a triple to center field. He came around to score when Frederick Keys outfielder Glynn Davis knocked him in on a fielder's choice. Alfaro also threw out an attempted base stealer to end the second inning.

Beck collected the first of seven hits by the Carolina League in the second inning. He singled off of California League starting pitcher and Reds farmhand Ben Lively. Garia replaced him on a fielder's choice and was caught stealing to end the inning.

Faulkner worked a perfect third inning. He struck out Chris Jacobs and Anthony Kemp.

Claudio came on in the seventh. The first man to face Claudio reached on an error but he induced a ground ball double-play ball and struck out Jesse Winker to end the frame.

With one out in the eighth inning, Garia singled and reached second on an error. He then got to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Lynchburg's Kyle Wren to trim the lead to 3-2.

The Carolina League got the tying and winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Potomac's Shawn Pleffner struck out to end the ballgame. Garia was left up on deck.

Joey Gallo and Chi Chi Gonzalez did not make the trip, as they were promoted to Double-A last week. Royce Bolinger and Nick Williams were both elected as well but did not make the trip because they are both on the disabled list.
