Pelicans split double-header with BlueRocks

August 29, 2013

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (75-61, 35-32), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, snapped a six-game losing streak Thursday, splitting a double-header with the Wilmington BlueRocks at Frawley Stadium. The Pelicans finished the road trip 1-5 and head home for their final regular season series of 2013.

Pitching controlled the night as the Pelicans earned a 3-0 win in the first game before falling 1-0 in the second seven-inning game.

Odubel Herrera paced the Pelicans offense on the night, posting three hits, including two in the first game.

The Pelicans scored all three of their game-one runs in the sixth inning. Drew Robinson added a two-RBI triple in the sixth inning to put the Birds on the board. Trever Adams extended the rally with an RBI single that landed behind the drawn-in infield.

Chi Chi Gonzalez started the first game for the Pelicans and turned in four scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Randol Rojas (4-3) earned the game-one win, hurling two solid frames with three punch outs. Tyler Smith notched the final three outs and claimed his first Carolina League save.

Will Lamb was a tough-luck loser in game two, allowing just one earned run - an RBI double from Micah Gibbs in the fourth inning. The left-hander struck out six and walked just one.

The Pelicans loaded the bases in the seventh and final inning following singles from Trever Adams, Royce Bolinger and Odubel Herrera. Malcomb Culver struck out Preston Beck and Jake Skole to end the game.

The Pelicans return home Saturday to begin a fun three-game series with the Carolina Mudcats at TicketReturn.com Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com or by calling 918-6000.
