MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (May 16, 2017) - In a drive to provide support to the people affected by the East Texas tornadoes in late April, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will hold a pair of auctions for the Van Zandt County Tornado Relief Fund. The club will run an online auction from May 29 through June 3, while a silent auction will be held from May 31 through June 3 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Several deadly tornadoes touched down near Canton, Texas on April 29, killing four people, leaving dozens injured and laying waste damage and destruction throughout the East Texas region. The Pelicans' effort to lend a hand to the relief fund is spurred by assistant coach Ty Wright, who grew up in Tyler, Texas, a roughly 40-minute ride from Canton.
"I saw pictures on Facebook and people that I know, their extended family, that I know they love and care about, were definitely affected," Wright said. "The pictures affected me enough. I saw a before and after picture of houses, and then the after picture was just the wood frame on the ground. It was just unbelievable to see some of that stuff. That's what really got me in the mindset of wanting to do something to help people out in the greater East Texas area."
As part of the auctions, fans will have the opportunity to bid on signed baseball, bats, photos and other memorabilia from both current and former Chicago Cubs like Anthony Rizzo , Kris Bryant and Ryne Sandberg. Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans like Jason Heyward , Elvis Andrus and Joey Gallo will also be featured amongst the items, as well as other signed items from current and former major leaguers.
"I reached out to people who are dedicated a lot of time right now to their baseball club and their job, which takes up a lot of their time, and just to take a couple simple minutes out and get some stuff sent out down here to Myrtle Beach has been a tremendous help towards the cause," said Wright. "Everybody is always wanting to help and get on board with that. It's been a very positive reaction from players, family and people that are kind of starting to hear about what we're going to do here in the next couple of weeks."
Items from the online auction can be bid on at www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Auctions. The club's ballpark auction will be on the concourse on the first base side of the facility. All proceeds will go to the Van Zandt County Tornado Relief Fund.
"You always want to help out," Wright said. "Obviously, being in Myrtle Beach, coaching and doing the stuff here, it's hard to. So this is the only way that I was able to help out, by raising money and sending it down there. Hopefully, it affects some families in a positive way, and they can move on forward from the tragic that happened in the past."
