Robinson helps Birds edge Muddies

August 31, 2013

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (76-61, 36-32), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, rallied in the ninth inning to edge the Carolina Mudcats 4-3 to begin a three-game series at TicketReturn.com Field. The last-inning win is the Pelicans ninth walk-off victory of the season.

With the game tied 3-3, Drew Robinson smacked a leadoff double to begin the bottom of the ninth inning. Moments later, on a bunt from Trever Adams, he would score the winning run on a throwing error from Muddies first baseman Jerrud Sabourin.

Robinson was instrumental in the Pelicans erasing a 3-0 deficit. With two outs in the sixth, and the Pelicans trailing 3-1, he hit a game-tying two-run home run off right-hander Cole Cook. Robinson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the game.

With the potential go-ahead run at third base in the ninth inning, Cody Ege (1-0), making his Carolina League debut, struck out Jordan Smith to preserve the tie and send things to the last of the ninth inning. The left-hander earned the win for the Birds. Rob Nixon (3-6) was saddled with the loss for the Mudcats, allowing just one unearned run, the game-winner, on two hits over an inning.

Carolina's all-star infielder Joey Wendle stroked a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Muddies an early 2-0 lead. The Mudcats added to their lead in the second inning with an RBI double from Todd Hankins.

Luis Parra started for the Pelicans and went six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Kellin Deglan was robbed of a two-run home run in the second inning when Bryson Myles made a leaping catch in front of the right-center field fence.

The Birds got on the board following a Jake Skole double in the third inning. Later in the inning, he scored on an RBI ground out from Hanser Alberto.

The Pelicans host the second game of a three-game series against the Carolina Mudcats Sunday at Pelicans Ballpark. Right-hander Nick McBride (0-5, 3.68) will be opposed by lefty Shawn Morimando (8-12, 3.32). Tickets are available for purchase online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com or by calling 918-6000.
