McCarvel homers in fourth

Peoria, IL - Ryan McCarvel's three-run homer against the Burlington Bees proved to be the difference for the Peoria Chiefs as they came back to win the home opener on Saturday night, 3-1. The Chiefs move to 2-0 and will wrap up the series with Burlington on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

     Chiefs starter Ronnie Williams walked Brennon Lund to start the second inning. A walk to John Schuknecht moved Lund to second and an RBI single by Jeyson Sanchez plated the first run of the game, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.  

     The Chiefs offense was slow to start, but broke through in the fourth inning. Stefan Trosclair and Brian O'Keefe both singled, and McCarvel hit a three-run homer off Jesus Castillo to give the Chiefs a 3-1 lead.  

     Williams went 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on a hit with four walks and two strikeouts in a no decision. Daylin Martinez (1-0) earned his first win of the season, pitching 4 1/3 innings while allowing three hits and striking out five. Brady Bowen, who earned a hold, followed Martinez out of the bullpen while throwing 1 2/3 shutout innings while allowing two walks with two strikeouts. Estarlin Arias (S,1) earned his first save of the season, throwing 1 1/3 shutout innings without allowing a hit.

Notes… The Chiefs had 16 home runs in the first half of 2016, and now have four in the first two games of 2017… Six of the Chiefs 11 runs this season have been plated as a result of home runs… The Chiefs are 2-0 for the first time since 2007… The Chiefs will close the opening series with the Burling Bees on Sunday with a 5:00 first pitch… The Chiefs will start LH Ian Oxnevad (0-0, 0.00) and the Bees will start RH Joe Gatto (0-0, 0.00)… Sunday is a PNC Kids Sunday where kids receive five dollar admission and free food (hot dog, chips, and drink) as well as Senior Sunday where seniors (55 and older) get five dollar tickets… Kids 12 and under can get player autographs at 4:15 p.m. and can run the bases post-game…All fans can play catch on the field post-game…The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 4:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android…The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App.
