Peoria, IL - Ryan McCarvel's three-run homer against the Burlington Bees proved to be the difference for the Peoria Chiefs as they came back to win the home opener on Saturday night, 3-1. The Chiefs move to 2-0 and will wrap up the series with Burlington on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
Chiefs starter Ronnie Williams walked Brennon Lund to start the second inning. A walk to John Schuknecht moved Lund to second and an RBI single by Jeyson Sanchez plated the first run of the game, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs offense was slow to start, but broke through in the fourth inning. Stefan Trosclair and Brian O'Keefe both singled, and McCarvel hit a three-run homer off Jesus Castillo to give the Chiefs a 3-1 lead.
Williams went 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on a hit with four walks and two strikeouts in a no decision. Daylin Martinez (1-0) earned his first win of the season, pitching 4 1/3 innings while allowing three hits and striking out five. Brady Bowen, who earned a hold, followed Martinez out of the bullpen while throwing 1 2/3 shutout innings while allowing two walks with two strikeouts. Estarlin Arias (S,1) earned his first save of the season, throwing 1 1/3 shutout innings without allowing a hit.
