(Game One)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After game five of Opening Week between the Peoria Chiefs and Cedar Rapids Kernels was postponed due to rain, the two teams played a doubleheader on Sunday with both games scheduled for seven innings. The Kernels got on the board first in the bottom of the third on the way to a 3-0 victory in game one.

Lead off batter Jhon Torres got on base via walk to start the game and was eventually advanced to third by way of an Alec Burleson single. With runners on the corners, the Chiefs looked like they were going to get on the board early in the contest but were unable to capitalize, leaving two men on base.

Cedar Rapids took advantage of a bases loaded and nobody out situation in the bottom of third as a deep fly ball to centerfield resulted in a sac fly, giving the Kernels a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, a double off of the bat of Wander Javier increased the Cedar Rapids lead to 2-0.

The Kernels added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Alex Isola picked up an RBI single to centerfield.

(Game Two)

After a short break, the Chiefs and Kernels closed out their six-game series with another seven inning contest. After seven innings, the two teams were deadlocked at two runs apiece, setting up the first extra inning contest of the season. With the ghost runner starting on second, the Kernels eventually came away with a 3-2 win in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Cedar Rapids struck first as a Matt Wallner single drove home the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

In the very next inning, the Chiefs were able loaded the bases with one out. Jhon Torres hit a deep fly ball to centerfield to drive home Imeldo Diaz from third and tie the game at one run apiece.

The Kernels threatened to regain the lead in the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded but Fabian Blanco struck out Wallner to get out of the jam.

Peoria took the lead in the top of the fifth as Brendan Donovan drove Alec Burleson home from third. Cedar Rapids responded in the bottom half of the inning as Gabe Snyder scored on a fielder's choice play.

After seven innings of play, the game was tied at two. With the new rules across the MLB, a runner starts on second for each team in extra innings.

The Chiefs were able to advance Burleson to third in the top half of the eighth but were unable to capitalize and regain the lead. Yeltsin Encarnacion drove in the winning run for the Kernels in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.

The Peoria Chiefs will return to Dozer Park for their first home game in 620 days on Tuesday, May 11 as they host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The Chiefs and Timber Rattlers will play a six-game series at Dozer Park from May 11-16.
