Chiefs Lose Late Lead in Iowa

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs allowed three runs in the seventh inning and lost to the Burlington Bees 5-3 Sunday afternoon. The loss, their eighth in a row, drops the Chiefs to 3-14 in the second half and 33-53 overall.

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs allowed three runs in the seventh inning and lost to the Burlington Bees 5-3 Sunday afternoon. The loss, their eighth in a row, drops the Chiefs to 3-14 in the second half and 33-53 overall.

     The Chiefs took the lead in the third inning against Burlington starter Robinson Pina. Brandon Riley led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. Edwin Figuera's single to center plated Riley and gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
     Burlington answered that run with one of their own in the bottom of the inning. Justin Jones led off with a single and the next two batters reached to load the bases. With one down, Nonie Williams walked to score Jones and tie the game before Michael Brettell got out of the inning
     Peoria regained the lead in the fifth against Pina. Josh Shaw led off with a single and scored on a triple to left by Delvin Perez as the Chiefs took a 2-1 lead. Brady Whalen's sacrifice fly to right gave the visitors a two-run lead and moved Whalen into 2nd in the MWL with 51 RBI.
     Burlington got one run back in the bottom of the fifth. Jordyn Adams led off with a double to left and scored on a single by Maitan to cut the Chiefs lead to 3-2. The Chiefs held onto the lead as Riley threw out Maitan at the plate to end the inning after a single by Keinner Piña.
     Burlington took the lead in the seventh against relievers Rodard Avelino and Parker Kelly. Avelino walked the first two batters before giving way to Kelly and with one out a third walk loaded the bases. Kelly got a pop up for the second out before two straight hits scored three runs and put the Bees on top 5-3.
     Brettell allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings as he walked three and struck out five. Avelino (0-1) allowed two runs on three walks and no hits over one inning. Kelly allowed one run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts over two innings.
