DAYTON, OH - The Chiefs scored a pair of first inning tallies and never looked back as they cruised to a 9-2 win over the Dayton Dragons Sunday. With the victory, Peoria secured the series and won their 10th road game in their last 12 tries.

The Chiefs took advantage of three Dayton free passes in the opening inning to draw first blood. With the bases loaded, Tyler Reichenborn crunched a two-run double off the wall in left center, missing a grand slam by a couple feet, to plate a pair and give the visitors a 2-0 cushion.

Peoria quickly doubled their lead in the top of the second. After a pair of walks, a wild pitch put runners on second and third for Todd Lott. Peoria’s lead-off batter looped a single into center against a drawn-in infield to make it a 4-0 bulge.

The early advantage was more than enough for Chiefs starter Dionys Rodriguez. The Cardinals No. 30 prospect was on his game early and stymied the Dragons on Sunday. Rodriguez scattered just two hits over four shutout innings and whiffed four. He passed the baton to Nathanael Heredia who chipped in a pair of scoreless frames to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard and earn the win.

In the top of the seventh, Peoria erased any doubt. The Chiefs sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times to break the game wide open. With the bases loaded and one out, LJ Jones earned an RBI the easy way as he was hit by a pitch. Tommy Jew, who reached three times Sunday, walked in to make it 5-0. A Reichenborn sac fly bolstered the lead to 6-0 before Ramon Mendoza and Luis Rodriguez singled in runs to make it an 8-0 Peoria lead. Rodriguez collected three hits on the day to tie a career high. Jew, the man who started the inning, then worked a bases loaded walk to put the bow on a five-run inning and a 9-0 Peoria lead.

Dayton broke through in the eighth on a two-run single but they never threatened the Chiefs. Chris Roycroft worked a clean ninth inning to put the game in the win column for Peoria.

The Chiefs will enjoy an off day Monday before their road trip resumes Tuesday in Midland, Michigan. Inohan Paniagua, the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July, is slated to take the bump for Peoria. First pitch is set for 7:05 EST/6:05 CST.
