Peoria, IL - Anthony Shew struck out 11 for the Peoria Chiefs while holding the Clinton LumberKings to one run on four hits in a 2-1 win on Friday. The Chiefs are 29-25 in the second half and lead the Beloit Snappers by 1 ½ games in the Wild Card race with 16 games to go.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second, when the Chiefs started the scoring against LumberKings starter Steven Ridings. With one out, Dylan Carlson walked and went to third when Matt Fiedler roped a single to right field. Fiedler stole second, drawing an errand throw from Clinton Catcher Nick Thurman to score Carlson and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Fiedler moved to third on a passed ball, but Ridings worked out of the inning by retiring the next two Peoria hitters.

Anthony Shew was lights-out for the Chiefs over his first six innings of work. The righty retired the first nine LumberKings he faced, striking out three and holding the rest to ground ball outs. Clinton collected just two hits over the first 6 2/3 innings of the game before finally scoring against Shew. Gareth Morgan homered to deep left-center field, just out of the reach of a leaping Nick Plummer, to tie the game at 1-1.
Peoria took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh against Clinton reliever Wyatt Mills. Juan Yepez led off with a walk, but wasn't on first for long. Dylan Carlson pulled a double to right field, plating Yepez who slid in feet-first ahead of the tag to stake Peoria to a 2-1 lead.
Shew (2-0) went 7 1/3 innings in the win, holding the LumberKings to one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts in a quality start. LeLand Tilley got his first save of the season while as he walked one and struck out two over 1 2/3 hitless innings.
