Host Families

Please Note: This program is temporarily unavailable due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Please contact us at [email protected] or 207-874-9300 if you have any questions. We hope to have the program return once we resume normal operations. Thank you for your understanding.

Each season Sea Dog players come to Portland on their journey to their ultimate goal: playing for the Boston Red Sox. Sea Dog players come from all over the world and arrive in Portland a few days prior to the start of the season with new players arriving throughout the season. During their time in Portland, many players depend on host families to provide both a home and a family while they are away from theirs.

Presently the Sea Dogs are in need of host families for the 2019 season. Host families are asked to house a Sea Dog player during their time in Portland. The Sea Dogs' season runs from April through early September with the players spending half that time on the road. While at home, much of their time is spent at the ballpark.

It can be difficult for players to find a place to stay while in Portland because they could be promoted, demoted, released, or traded at any moment and they do not make an extraordinary amount of money to be able to pay rent for an apartment. Host families help bridge that gap and allow players to focus on working hard and enjoying Portland instead of worrying about where they will be staying.

Many players form lifelong bonds with their host families and usually involve their host families in team functions including tickets to the games. Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Justin Masterson are just a few of the Red Sox stars who stayed with a host family during their time in Portland.

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW:

We will need to know what accommodations you will be able to provide and rent you may charge (if any). We are open to any type of living arrangement that you are able to provide; spare bedroom, apartment, etc. The only requirement we have is that you must be able to provide the player with his own private bedroom.

THE PROCESS:

The Portland Sea Dogs do not place players with host families directly. We compile a list of potential host families and send it down to spring training in March. As players get assigned to Portland they get the list and contact host families directly. This way you can get to know the player and they can get to know you and make sure it will be a good fit for all involved. Once the season starts we have players coming in and leaving all the time, so we also keep the list on file to give the new players once they arrive.
