Portland Sea Dogs mascot, Slugger the Sea Dog, will walk from Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts to Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine to raise money and awareness for Tourette's Syndrome (TS).
May 8, 2014 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the day Slugger emerged from the chilly waters of Casco Bay and made his way to Hadlock Field!
Twenty years! Can you believe it!?!
Over the past 20 years . . .
Slugger has been to every single Sea Dogs game;
Slugger had visited thousands of schools;
Slugger has eaten tens of thousands of Sea Dog Biscuits; and
Slugger has met over 10 million fans!
To celebrate 20 years in Portland, Slugger wanted to do something BIG - like Crazy Slugger Big! So on May 4, 2014 Slugger and his original trainer will meet at Fenway Park in Boston and they will walk (yup, WALK) home to Hadlock Field and to the best fans in baseball. A journey that will take Slugger 114 miles.
Slugger will depart from the warning track at Fenway Park at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, May 4th, just before that afternoons Red Sox game against the Oakland Athletics. He is scheduled to arrive at Hadlock Field on his 20th birthday; Thursday, May 8th in time for that evening's 6:00 PM Sea Dogs game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Slugger is walking to raise money for (and awareness of) Tourette's Syndrome (TS). TS is a neurobiological disorder characterized by involuntary sudden movements and vocalizations, known as tics. It is little understood and can be difficult to witness. And it affects kids right here in Maine; kids who are often bullied for something they just can't control.
So if you've ever laughed at Slugger's antics; or if you've beaten him in a race around the bases (you probably cheated); or if he has given you a high-five, taken a picture together, attended your birthday party, or just made you smile . . . please consider a contribution. 100% of the proceeds are going to Tourette's-related non-profits: the Tourette's Syndrome Association for their Youth Ambassador Program and Camp Twitch and Shout - a camp for kids with TS.
