Bowman's Complete Game Lifts Ports To 3-1 Win

August 27, 2013

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stockton Ports got just enough offense on Tuesday night, and starting pitcher Josh Bowman (6-6) took care of the rest. Bowman became the third Ports player since 2005 to pitch a nine-inning complete-game as he helped Stockton to a 3-1 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Bakersfield jumped on the board in the first inning with a solo home run from Juan Silverio to take an early 1-0 lead. Bowman, though, pitched around a leadoff single in the second and a two-out bunt-single in the third and allowed just two hits after the third inning. Outside of the home run, the other four hits allowed were singles.

After squandering an opportunity to score in the second inning with runners at second and third and one out, the Ports got a clutch hit to break through in the third. With runners at first and second and two out, Antonio Lamas singled to center to score Myrio Richard and Bobby Crocker and put the Ports in front 2-1.

The Ports added a run in the sixth on a leadoff home run by Bruce Maxwell to make it 3-0. All Ports runs came off Blaze starter Jake Johnson (6-6), who suffered the loss after going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits.

Bowman, meanwhile, set down 11 batters in a row beginning with the final out of the third. Beginning with the first out in the second inning, Bowman set down 21 of 23 batters to get through the eighth.

Bakersfield had Juan Silva reach to begin the ninth on a fielding error committed by Tony Thompson. Two batters later, Juan Duran singled with one out to put runners at the corners. With the tying runners aboard, Kyle Waldrop came to the plate and lined out to second, with Lamas throwing back to first to complete the game-ending double-play.

Bowman's nine-inning complete game was the first thrown by a Ports pitcher since Kevin Deaton accomplished the feat on August 7, 2007. Dallas Braden is the only other Ports pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game since Stockton became an A's affiliate, as Braden threw one on May 11, 2005.

The Ports and Blaze play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Tanner Peters (11-7, 4.08 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield left-hander Fabian Williamson (1-2, 6.38 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. PDT.
