Olson's Two Homers Help Ports Win Sixth Straight

May 13, 2014

STOCKTON, Calif. - For the second time in two weeks, the Stockton Ports have won six games in a row. In their first meeting of the season with the San Jose Giants, the Ports plated 10 runs on 14 hits including a pair of home runs from Matt Olson to earn a 10-5 victory over their North Division rivals on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

Stockton opened the scoring in the first as Olson drew a bases-loaded walk off Giants starter Martin Agosta (1-2). Ryon Healy followed with an RBI single to right and Chad Pinder came up next and drove in a run on a fielder's choice groundout to make it a 3-0 Ports lead.

San Jose took advantage of a Ports fielding error in the second inning and took the lead. With one on and one out, Chuckie Jones hit an RBI single to left off Ports starter Seth Streich (4-2) to make it 3-1. With two on and two out, Jesus Galindo hit what looked to be an inning-ending grounder to Ports shortstop Daniel Robertson, but Robertson committed a fielding error that loaded the bases. Blake Miller came up next and lined a three-run double down the left-field line that gave the Giants a 4-3 lead.

The four runs in the second were the only runs allowed by Streich as he went on to retire eight batters in a row to finish his outing. Streich picked up the win, going five innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out seven.

After loading the bases with nobody out and coming away empty-handed in the second, the Ports struck for three more runs in the third. Olson led off with a home run to left-center to tie the game at 4-4. After back-to-back singles by Healy and Pinder, Agosta was lifted in favor of Jeff Soptic, who gave up a single to Bruce Maxwell followed by a sac-fly to Dusty Robinson that gave the Ports a 5-4 lead. Stockton added another run later in the inning on a passed ball to make it 6-4.

Agosta suffered the loss for the Giants, going two-plus innings and allowing six runs on seven hits.

Soptic gave up a run of his own in the fourth inning as Olson doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac-fly by Healy to stretch the Ports lead to 7-4. It was the only run charged to Soptic in three innings of relief.

Stephen Johnson took over for San Jose in the sixth and gave up another homer to Olson, his second of the night that made it an 8-4 contest. Johnson gave up another homer in the seventh, this time to Robinson to make it a 9-4 game. The Ports added an unearned run off Johnson in the eighth as Aaron Shipman scored on a fielding error committed by Giants second baseman Alberto Robles.

Nolan Sanburn pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Streich while Michael Ynoa pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on a solo homer hit by Jones to lead off the ninth.

The Ports will try for their seventh straight victory on Wednesday night when they host the Giants in the middle game of their three-game set at Banner Island Ballpark. Josh Bowman (0-4, 7.30 ERA) will make the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Pat Young (2-0, 3.86 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
