Ports Bats Come Alive In 17-7 Win

ADELANTO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports entered Saturday night's contest riding a four-game losing streak and a deep offensive slump. By night's end, both had been snapped. The Boys of Banner Island racked up 17 runs on 18 hits, both season highs, in a 17-7 victory over the High Desert Mavericks.

Mavericks starter Seon Gi Kim (1-1) walked back-to-back hitters in the second inning and then surrendered a three-run homer to Tony Thompson that gave Stockton a 3-0 lead, their first lead of the road trip. After a walk drawn by Addison Russell, Myrio Richard delivered an RBI double to left to make it 4-0. Richard would score later in the inning on an RBI single from Antonio Lamas, who had a five-hit performance, going 5-for-7 on the night.

Kim lasted just 1.2 innings and took the loss on the night, allowing five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one.

The Ports plated two more runs in the third on a two-run homer by Thompson, his second in as many at-bats, to make it a 7-0 lead. The Mavericks countered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single off the bat of Ji-Mon Choi to make it 7-1.

Stockton's biggest inning of the night came in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Dusty Robinson came to the plate and hit an RBI triple to right, giving the Ports a 10-1 cushion. Thompson came up next and grounded out to short to score Robinson and make it 11-1. Addison Russell followed with a solo home run to left, his first of the season. Russell's blast knocked reliever Tyler Blandford from the game as David Colvin came on next. Colvin surrendered four straight hits upon entering the game, including a double by Richard and an RBI single by Max Muncy to make it a 13-1 advantage.

Blandford went two innings and allowed seven runs on five hits while walking four. Colvin would go 2.1 innings and allow two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five.

The Mavericks scored three times in the fourth on an RBI single from Anthony Phillips and a two-run double hit by Chris Taylor to cut the deficit to 13-4.

Ports starter Deyvi Jimenez was lifted after the fourth inning and received a no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five.

After the Ports scored a run on a pair of errors by High Desert in the fifth, the Mavericks countered with a run off Ports reliever Seth Frankoff (1-0) in the bottom half of the inning to make it 14-5.

Frankoff took the win, going two innings and allowing an unearned run on one hit.

Dusty Robinson added a home run in the top of the seventh off reliever Matt Brazis to make it a 15-5 game. High Desert came back with two in the bottom half of the inning off Jake Brown as they had back-to-back doubles to start the inning from Choi and Dan Paolini, and a fielding error committed by Russell later in the inning that led to another run.

Brown went 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two.

The Ports plated runs in the eighth and ninth innings off the High Desert bullpen. In the eighth, Josh Whitaker lined an RBI double to left that scored Lamas and made it 16-7. In the ninth, with third baseman Dillon Hazlett in to pitch, B.A. Vollmuth hit his third home run in as many games, a solo shot to left that made it a 17-7 ballgame.

Vollmuth walked four times in the contest, more than any other Ports player has walked in a game this season. Lamas went 5-for-7 with five singles, becoming the second California League player in 2013 to notch five hits in a game. Robinson went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Thompson went 2-for-6 officially with six RBI, and Russell had a 2-for-4 effort with a home run and two runs scored.

Stockton and High Desert will play the finale of their three-game set on Sunday afternoon in Adelanto. Tanner Peters (2-1, 6.86 ERA) will head to the mound for Stockton, opposed by Mavericks right-hander Stephen Landazuri (1-0, 1.69 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. PDT.
