Stockton Shut Down In San Jose 3-0
SAN JOSE, Calif. - After a come-from-behind win on Wednesday night, the Stockton Ports offense struggled at every turn on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. The Ports mustered just five hits as they were shut out by the San Jose Giants 3-0, Stockton's fourth shutout loss of the season.
Like Wednesday night's contest, Thursday's game began as a pitcher's duel. Santiago Casilla started the game for San Jose on a Major League rehab assignment and struck out the side in order in the first. Joe Kurrasch (5-1) took over in the second and went on to pitch six shutout innings while allowing only three hits as he picked up the win. Kurrasch struck out three and walked one in his first appearance of the season versus Stockton.
Sean Murphy (0-1) pitched around a hit allowed in each of the first three innings and kept the Giants off the board before setting the side down in order for the first time in the fourth. Murphy pitched around a leadoff single in the fifth inning to keep San Jose out of the run column.
The Giants broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. Murphy opened the inning by allowing an infield single to Chuckie jones and walking Mitch Delfino. He was then lifted for Michael Ynoa, who gave up an RBI single to Blake Miller that gave the Giants a 1-0 lead. After a single by Brian Ragira loaded the bases, Shawn Payne hit into a fielder's choice with the out recorded at home plate. After Ynoa got Ben Turner to foul out to first base, Matt Pare came to the plate and hit a two-strike pitch into right-center that scored Miller and Ragira and stretched the San Jose lead to 3-0.
Murphy suffered the loss, going five-plus innings and allowing two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six. Ynoa allowed one run on three hits while striking out three in two innings of work. Omar Duran pitched a scoreless eighth for the Ports.
Tyler Mizenko pitched around a two-out single in the eighth inning for San Jose while Steven Okert (SV, 19) entered the game in the ninth and pitched around a one-out single hit by Ryon Healy to pick up his 19th save of the season.
The Ports and Giants play the third game of their four-game set on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Seth Streich (7-4, 3.21 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose left-hander Ryan Bradley (0-3, 7.50 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
