Ynoa Shines As Ports Beat Vogelsong, Giants 4-2

July 26, 2013

STOCKTON, Calif. - Much of the attention going into Friday night's game was focused on San Francisco Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (0-1) making the start on a Major League rehab assignment for the San Jose Giants. Stockton Ports starter Michael Ynoa (1-2), however, stole the show. Ynoa, in search of his first positive California League outing, shut out the Giants on just one hit in five and-a-third innings of work as he helped the Ports to 4-2 win, snapping a five-game losing skid. The game was played before a capacity crowd of 5,294 at Banner Island Ballpark.

After setting the side down in the first, Vogelsong, who was rehabbing a broken right pinky finger, issued a leadoff walk to B.A. Vollmuth in the second. After recording back-to-back strikeouts, Vogelsong gave up a two-run homer to Bruce Maxwell that gave the Ports a 2-0 lead. It was the only hit allowed by Vogelsong who went 2.2 innings and allowed two runs while walking one, hitting a batter and striking out three.

Ty Blach took over to start the fourth inning and pitched around a bases-loaded, two-out jam. In the fifth, however, Blach yielded a solo home run to Bobby Crocker, his 10th of the season, to make it a 3-0 Ports lead.

Ynoa, meanwhile, pitched around back-to-back walks with one out in the first and would end up striking out the side in the first and retiring seven-in-a-row to take him two outs deep into the third. Ynoa didn't allow a hit through five, and after striking out Matt Duffy to begin the sixth, allowed a single to left to Mac Williamson and was lifted from the game.

Ynoa earned his first California League win, going 5.1 shutout innings while walking three and striking out six.

Seth Frankoff took over for Ynoa and, after completing a scoreless sixth, allowed a leadoff single to Elliott Blair to open the seventh. Two batters later with one out, Chris Lofton singled to put runners at the corners, and Brock Bond grounded out to first to bring in the first Giants run of the game. It was the first earned run allowed by Frankoff since June 8th and the only run he allowed in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Ports got the run back in the bottom of the seventh as Myrio Richard legged out an infield single with two outs and scored on an ensuing RBI double by Josh Whitaker to make it a 4-1 game.

Blach went five innings in relief and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking two.

Ryan Dull (SV, 5) took over in the eighth and gave up a leadoff double to Williamson, who scored two batters later on a sac-fly by Ryan Cavan to make it 4-2. Following Williamson's double, however, Dull retired the next six batters to close out the ballgame and earn his fifth save of the season.

The Ports and Giants play the middle game of their three-game series on Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark. James Simmons (7-4, 4.52 ERA) toes the rubber for Stockton, opposed by San Jose left-hander Kelvin Marte (3-2, 3.28 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
