Sunday Stumble: Power lose 3-1 to 'Birds

Loss gives GBO control heading into final day of the season

(Salisbury, MD - September 3, 2017)-  The West Virginia Power lost 3-1 to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Power took an early lead before the Shorebirds capitalized on two errors in the fifth and sixth innings to take control for the victory.

West Virginia led 1-0 in the top of the second on a home run by Ryan Nagle. The Power outfielder hit a 1-1 pitch from Cody Dube over the right-center field wall; a 421-foot shot for his third home run of the year.

The Shorebirds scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, knocking Power spot starter Matt Eckelman out of the game. With runners on first and second, Milton Ramos grounded into a potential double play. After recording an out at second, Adrian Valerio's throw to first sailed into the Power dugout, allowing Gerrion Grim scored to tie the game. Daniel Fajardo singled with two outs, driving in Ramos for a 2-1 Shorebirds advantage.

Delmarva added a run on a single and an error in the sixth for 3-1 lead.

The Power put a runner on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but could not advance past second base.

Eckelman (5-6) allowed two runs, one earned on four hits over four and two-thirds in the loss, striking out four. Cody Dube (2-2) earned the win after five innings of six-hit, one-run ball. Francisco Jimenez blanked the Power over three relief innings and Jake Bray pitched the ninth for his 18th save.

West Virginia and Delmarva close the 2017 regular season on Monday afternoon at 2:05 P.M. Eduardo Vera will start for the Power and the Shorebirds will put former first round pick Hunter Harvey on the mound. The Power can clinch the Northern Division title on Monday with a win and a Greensboro loss.
