CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – In conjunction with the Minnesota Twins, the Cedar Rapids Kernels announce that Trey Cabbage has been promoted to the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge, and Max Smith has been transferred to Cedar Rapids from the Low-A Fort Myers Mighty Mussels. Brian Maloney, Senior Manager, Minor League Operations for the Twins, disseminated these moves.

Cabbage, an outfielder, hit two home runs over 17 games played for Cedar Rapids, and he finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle May 7 against Peoria within a 4-of-5 performance. Cabbage’s promotion marks his first-ever Double-A assignment. A fourth-round pick in 2015 out of Grainger High School in Tennessee, Cabbage saw action with the Kernels in four consecutive seasons between their Low-A and High-A affiliations. That four-season streak ties a modern Cedar Rapids franchise record.

Smith, who is also an outfielder, joins the Kernels after appearing in seven contests with Fort Myers. The early highlight of his 2021 campaign came May 5 when he drove in five runs at Bradenton featuring a first-inning grand slam. Smith played at UNLV and was drafted in the 31st round in 2019, and he earned 2019 Appalachian League All-Star recognition for the Rookie-Level Elizabethton Twins during his only previous active season in professional baseball.

With these transactions, the 2021 Kernels roster contains 27 active players along with two people on the injured list, one individual on the temporary inactive list, and one man on the restricted list.

A 12-game Kernels homestand continues Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. when Cedar Rapids hosts the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Series promotions feature “Copa de la Diversión” Night this Wednesday, Big Screen Thursday sponsored by First Federal Credit Union and 104.5 KDAT, Two for One Friday courtesy of 98.1 KHAK, Saturday postgame fireworks, and Kids Eat Free Sunday presented by Great Clips and Z102.9. Live broadcasts of this week’s games will be on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
