Mariners Outlast Burlington 3-2 in 10 Innings

July 30, 2014

The Pulaski Mariners (22-17) required one extra inning to take the rubber match away from the Burlington Royals (18-21) 3-2.

Spencer Hermann (0-0, 0.00 ERA) made his Appalachian League debut for Pulaski. Hermann pitched six innings of no-run, four-hit ball and struck out two. He would not factor into the decision.

Carlton Tanabe mashed his first home run of the year in the sixth inning to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. The left field blast scored Rafael Fernandez who reached base on a hit by pitch.

Burlington knotted up the score in the bottom of the seventh of Ugueth Urbina (1-2, 6.56 ERA). Manny Olloque and D.J. Burt came home on a double by Leland Clemmons.

The Mariners won the game with a one-run tenth inning. Pulaski scratched across the lone run without the benefit of a hit. Tom Verdi led off the inning by reaching second on a throwing error by Olloque. Two consecutive sacrifice bunts would bring Verdi home.

Trey Cochran-Gill (3-0, 0.00 ERA) struck out the side to close out the contest.

Pulaski heads to Danville for a crucial series with the Braves. Wednesday's win at Burlington brings the Mariners within two game of the division-leading Braves who play later tonight against the Kingsport Mets.
