The Quad Cities River Bandits pounded out 20 hits, the most in a game since 2012, but had to hang on down the stretch to knock off the Beloit Snappers 10-9 in the opening game of the series at Pohlman Field. Beloit put the potential winning run on second base in the bottom of the ninth before Riley Cabral struck out Max Schuemann to end the game. The River Bandits clinched the first half Western Division title with the win and Burlington's loss earlier in the night.
The biggest inning for the River Bandits (40-21) was their five-run second frame. The inning began with the Bandits trailing 2-0 and a groundout to short by Freudis Nova. Following the out, the Bandits went on to tally seven consecutive hits and score five runs in the inning. Those seven hits were the most for the Bandits in a single inning this season. David Hensley, Michael Wielansky, Ross Adolph and Austin Dennis each collected RBI in the stanza.
Quad Cities built a pair of four-run leads as it appeared they were prepared to take control of the contest each time. Jeremy Pena's two-RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded in the fourth put the Bandits on top 8-4. Beloit (25-38) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the same inning to close within 8-6. That score held until the top of the eighth when the Bandits pushed the advantage to 10-6 with an RBI single by Freudis Nova and a run-scoring double off the bat of Ruben Castro.

The lead carried into the ninth with Cabral taking the hill for his second inning of work. The right-hander walked the leadoff hitter before registering the first out on a fielder's choice. The next four hitters all reached base safely, scoring three runs in the process to make it 10-9. Ryan Gridley hit a tapper back to the mound with the tying run on third base and the Bandits caught Cobie Vance in a rundown for the second out. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third prior to Schuemann's game-ending strikeout.
Every starter in each team's lineup collected at least one hit. Wilyer Abreu led the way with four hits while Dennis and Ruben Castro added three of their own for the Bandits. Four other players registered a pair of hits. Beloit was paced by Ryan Gridley who went 3-6 with three doubles.
The last time the River Bandits finished with more hits was on May 5th of 2012 when they collected 23 against the Peoria Chiefs. The Bandits have won back-to-back first half Western Division titles.
The River Bandits and Snappers will meet for the second game of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Cody Deason (3-2, 4.05) will get the start for the River Bandits against Beloit's RHP Reid Birlingmair (2-2, 3.12).
